Amazing Baby Review

I’ve had to move Amazing Baby by Desmond Morris to higher shelves in my home because apparently I am not the only one who loves it: my kids cannot stop looking at the pictures and cooing, how cute, how cute, was I this cute mommy when I was little?

And I echo my children’ s feelings. The first thing that comes to mind when I pick up Amazing Baby, which I have done several times, is how cute babies are. Seriously, these pictures are amazing! Lovely photographs of adorable babies coupled with interesting facts about babies’ stages and development. My favorite way to learn: important facts next to little chubby cheeks and butts.

OK, when I read Amazing Baby I want to have another baby and I already have five little ones.

But it’s not just the pictures. The book shares interesting information about stages and development of babies from birth to two years old and it does so with an easy and down to earth tone.

The book celebrates the first two years of life and tells us how how babies learn to talk, why the baby’s skin is so sensitive (and why we love to snuggle with them); it talks about the muscular skeletal system, the endocrine system, growth spurts and all of the amazing events that happens during the first two years of a baby’s life.

In a nice way, it validates the many ways that we parents feel about our children: they are amazing little ones.

My own children loved to look at the pictures. All of them, from my oldest, age 8, to my toddlers.  Another great thing about author Desmond Morris is the tone of the book: positive! It doesn’t go on and on about all of the possible negative outcomes, though it talks about tantrums and difficult behaviors, but it’s encouraging, and better yet, friendly.

The photograph overlays added a lot to my understanding of baby biology, and the facts Morris includes are truly fascinating. I loved learning how a female fetus seems to be more reluctant ot leave the mother’s womb – girls know better :)

This book is a great gift for new and seasoned parents. And everyone will enjoy it, adults and the children alike.

Thank you Parent Bloggers Network for another great book!
